Dive Deeper
iPod classic was the 6th generation of Apple's standard 'iPod' product line, and was the first to use the classic branding. It succeeded the iPod (5th generation), and was the final major redesign of the product line ahead of discontinuation seven years later in 2014.
Apple offered this device in two different storage options, 80GB or 160GB.
The new entry-level model had 50GB of more space compared to its predecessor which started at 30GB. As the iPod used hard drive storage, the model with less storage benefitted from a thinner design, which was a noticeable 3.5mm thinner.
This was the only size difference, with both models containing the same-sized display and scroll wheel.
The larger 160GB model could store up to 40,000 songs according to Apple, which was a major leap up from the 1,000 songs on the original which launched 6 years prior.
160GB of storage was the most storage Apple had ever put into an iPod classic, and was the highest they ever went before it was discontinued.
