Apple Maps has reportedly been updated to use the name 'Lake America', instead of 'Lake Ontario' for the body of water between the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of New York.
As first reported by Bloomberg, Apple Maps users in the United States will see the name Lake America, following an Executive Order passed by the country's president that changed the lakes official name.
It's a controversial change for Canadians, which saw Ontario Premier Doug Ford install a sign next to the lake, saying "Lake Ontario, Now and always". Due to these tensions, Canadian users will see the name Lake Ontario.
Internationally, outside of the US and Canada, users are expected to see both names: "Lake Ontario (Lake America)"
As an Apple Maps user in the UK, I still only see the name Lake Ontario.
Gulf of Mexico
This is not the first time Apple Maps has had to rename a body of water, following an executive order by the US president.
In early 2025, Apple renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America for its US users. The name did not change in Mexico, but international users now see both names.
Other Map Providers
Other major map providers, including Google Maps, have already updated the lakes name. Google uses the same naming system as Apple, basing the name on the users geographical location.
Notably, MapQuest, another map provider, refused to change the name, posting on X "We're not changing it." alongside a photo of the lake.
