Apple is preparing to launch Apple Pay in India as soon as October, Mark Gurman has said in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter.
The payment service is available in over 95 countries worldwide, and has become one of the biggest mobile payment services in many European and North American nations. The service is also available across parts of Africa, Asia and the Middle East and is now expected to launch in the world's most populated nation, with over 1.4 billion people.
Apple Pay allows iPhone and Apple Watch users to add their debit or credit card to their Apple Wallet, and pay at contactless card readers via their device. The service also supports online payments across iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Bloomberg previously reported in February that Apple was in talks with Indian Banking companies, including ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank.
India's 'Unified Payments Interface' (UPI), which is a service allowing instant transfers in the country is expected to be supported by Apple Pay. Bloomberg says UPI "dominates India’s digital payments space."
An October 2026 launch of Apple Pay in India would continue the company's expansion of Apple Pay in Asia this year, following Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in June, and the Philippines in August.
Apple Pay initially launched 12 years ago in 2014, available in the United States. The service went international in July 2015 launching in the United Kingdom, with Canada and Australia following a few months later.
