One of the biggest retailers in the United States, Walmart, has announced it will begin to roll out support for Apple Pay and other 'Tap to Pay' methods from the end of August 2026.

The company, in a press release, has said that customers will be able to "check out using [an] eligible contactless card, phone, or smartwatch" and also announced that customers will be able to add their Walmart, Sam's Club and OnePay cards to Apple Wallet, or their other mobile wallet provider.

Walmart is the world's second biggest company by revenue, according to research by companiesmarketcap.com, reporting £531.68 billion in revenue between May 2025 and April 2026.

This announcement may come as a shock to many that Walmart did not support these payment methods before.

In the UK, the majority of retailers, small and large, support Apple Pay. It is unusual for a company to not offer this payment method.

About two-thirds of UK adults were registered with at least one mobile payment service last year, according to a report from BBC News.

For the millions of Walmart shoppers, this will be a welcome announcement, and provide a more convenient way to pay each week.

Walmart says select Walmart and Sam's Club locations will support tap to pay from 24th August, and the company will continue to roll out the payment method to all stores by the end of the year.

The company's petrol stations will be slower to adopt, rolling out until mid-2027.
