Current rumours suggest that Apple's smallest Mac desktop is set for a refresh in the coming months, with Tim Cook's latest comments providing a potential clue about when the next-generation models will arrive.
Last week, Mark Gurman posted on X that Apple plans to release a "M5 Pro + M6 Mac mini", but that their release dates are "tied to the memory shortage."
Current Mac mini models are experiencing extended delivery dates and supply constraints in many regions, with Apple's Online Store in the UK suggesting an end of August to early September delivery date. Last year, Apple was able to ship Mac mini units with next-day delivery.
In addition to Mark Gurman's reporting, Apple's CEO has also dropped potential hints that Mac mini is on track for release soon.
In April, Apple announced that it will begin to manufacture the Mac mini in a new Houston, Texas facility, later in the year.
Last night, during Apple's Q3 earnings call, Tim Cook confirmed that production had not yet begun, telling the call that manufacturing begins "later this year".
Whilst Apple has not confirmed which generation of Mac mini will be produced at this facility, this could mark the beginning of production for M5/M6 units. It would be unusual to start producing the two year old model that is approaching the end of its lifecycle.
The company also needs to manufacture enough units before the device is announced, allowing the Mac to be stocked and available in Apple Stores, at third-party retailers and on Apple's website globally.
When Will Mac mini Launch?
Based on Apple's manufacturing timeline, current rumours and supply constraints, Everything Apple expects that the next generation Mac mini will arrive between late 2026 to early 2027.
It might not launch until at least late October, where the company is also expected to announce other Macs, including the Touchscreen MacBook Pro.
However, we would not be surprised if the M5/M6 generation of Mac minis do not arrive until spring next year, as tech companies continue to navigate through the memory chip crisis.
