iPhone

iPhone, also known as iPhone 2G or iPhone (1st generation), was released to the UK market on the 9th November 2007, four months after it went on sale in the United States. Whilst the original iPhone started from 4GB of storage in the US, it started from 8GB in the UK.

It launched with O2 as the exclusive network carrier and customers who purchased an iPhone in the UK needed to take out an 18-month contract with the company.

The launch of the iPhone was global news and marked a major turning point for how people used mobile phones. It was originally announced at Macworld in January 2007 by Apple co-founder and then-CEO Steve Jobs, who said it was a phone, an internet communicator and an iPod all in one device.

Jobs made a point of the keyboard being software-based which allowed them to give the iPhone a larger screen. Competitors devices had physical keyboards, which always took up the bottom proportion of the device.

iPhone was originally met with criticism from top tech figures, including Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who believed a software-based keyboard would make it "not a very good email machine" and that it therefore "doesn't appeal to business customers".

Of course, this is now an infamous statement after the major success of the iPhone. in just 74 days, before it even reached the UK, Apple announced that they had sold 1 million units. The total number of original iPhone units sold is believed to be over 6 million.
