NOTE: This page details the UK launch of the iPhone and not the launch of the 4GB model on the 29th June 2007 in the US.

The original iPhone launched in the UK on 9th November 2007. This was launched over four months after it went on sale in the US on 29th June 2007. Most notably the 4GB model available in the US never came to the UK, instead starting at 8GB.

O2 was the exclusive carrier for the iPhone and required an 18-month O2 contract.

The launch of the iPhone was global news and arguably the turning point for how people used mobile phones. Steve Jobs originally announced the device as being a phone, an internet communicator and an iPod all in one device.

Jobs made a point of the keyboard being software-based, unlike its competitors such as BlackBerry allowing for a larger display. This was originally criticised by many people including Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer who noted 'it doesn't appeal to business customers' as it doesn't have a keyboard 'which makes it not a very good email machine'.
