iPhone 5c was Apple's first attempt at a budget, more entry-level iPhone after the company had focused its previous models on the premium market.
Unlike Apple's other iPhone models, such as the iPhone 5s that debuted alongside the 5c, it did not use aluminium and instead featured a polycarbonate unibody design. Apple has not returned to a polycarbonate iPhone body since.
While Apple never explicitly discloses what the lettering in its iPhone names means, many believed the c stood for "colour", as it was the first time Apple had moved away from its more traditional silver and dark finishes and introduced a range of bright colours.
The iPhone 5c used Apple's previous-generation A6 chip, which had first launched in the iPhone 5 the previous year.
Apple also introduced colourful silicone cases for the iPhone 5c that were colour-matched to the devices and featured a perforated back. Apple showcased a mix of colours, allowing you to create a two-tone design.
The cases were designed alongside the iPhone, with Apple saying that "the circle pattern draws focus to the color underneath," and that you could create "30 fun combinations."
