iPhone SE was the first generation SE model that Apple introduced as the most powerful phone with a four inch display.
The device made its debut just months after Apple introduced its redesigned iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models, which featured larger displays and an external redesign.
At the time, small-screen phones were much more common, and Apple used the iPhone SE as a way to continue to serve this market whilst advancing its higher-end models. Then-SVP of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller said "Everyone who wants a smaller phone is going to love iPhone SE."
iPhone SE utilised the same external design as the iPhone 5s, but with updated internal components such as a newer chip.
The device had Touch ID authentication built into the home button.
iPhone SE initially launched in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Singapore, the UK, US Virgin Islands and the US in March 2016 and was released to more nations a month later, including countries across Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
