We've already taken a look at everything we know so far about the iPhone Fold, so now let's take a deeper dive into the fan favourite; the iPhone 18 Pro.

Design

We are expecting the same look and design as the iPhone 17 Pro, which brought a major design change over it's predecessor, the iPhone 16 Pro.

The aluminium unibody design will remain, with the Ceramic Shield glass cutout on the back for MagSafe and wireless charging support. Some rumours report that the back glass cutout will colour match the aluminium frame, to try and avoid the two-tone look.

On the front, bezels could get thinner and the Dynamic Island could shrink. This will be the first change to Dynamic Island since its debut in iPhone 14 Pro in 2022.

Colours

iPhone 18 Pro could arrive with three or four colour variants, but black is not expected to make a return. Instead, Apple may offer two new flagship colours; Light Blue and Dark Cherry. These colours will debut alongside Silver, and potentially Dark Grey.

Light Blue is expected to be similar to the Sierra Blue colour way found on the iPhone 13 Pro, and could match the light blues found on the MacBook Air, iPad Air, iPad mini and AirPods Max.

Dark Cherry appears to be a deep red or purple finish, depending on what is finalised by Apple.

Cameras

iPhone 18 Pro could receive Variable Aperture, a mechanical addition to the camera that physically adjusts how much light it lets in.

This works in a similar way to the human eye, where the pupil grows bigger to let more light in when it's dark and shrinks in brighter light.

The camera would open wider when in night mode to let in more light, reducing the darkness and grainy effect of the photo.

This will reduce the iPhones reliance on software and AI image processing, providing a more authentic camera experience.

However, this change may be exclusive to the Pro Max model.

The telephoto camera could join the Fusion Main and Fusion Ultra Wide cameras with 48MP. The current iPhone 17 Pro has a 12MP Telephoto lens, instead of 48MP.

Performance

Last year, Apple introduced vapour chamber cooling to the Pro iPhone models. This is expected to return, but may be bigger to keep the iPhone cooler for longer, helping prevent the device from thermal throttling and overheating.

The A20 Pro chip is also expected to make its debut in the iPhone 18 Pro & Pro Max, with up to 16GB of RAM, for better AI performance. However, due to the current memory chip crisis the iPhone 18 Pro could remain at 12GB of RAM, like the iPhone 17 Pro. This remains an improvement over older Pro models, including the iPhone 16 Pro, which has 8GB of RAM.

Battery Life

A larger battery is expected, with reports suggesting that the base iPhone 18 Pro could have a 4,288 mAh battery. This is slightly larger than iPhone 17 Pro, which has a capacity of 4,252 mAh. It is important to note these claims are based on the eSIM only model, which was not available in the UK last year. It remains unclear if the UK will receive the physical sim models this year.

Price

Price hikes could be coming to the iPhone, with £300 price increases not ruled out. However, £1,399 for an iPhone 18 Pro seems a bit high, with Everything Apple anticipating a price between £1,099 to £1,199. Last year, Apple raised the price of their pro models from £999 to £1,099, but doubled the base storage.

This year, price increases are expected without a base storage bump. Apple did increase trade in prices earlier this month, which could signal higher iPhone prices.

Final Thoughts

This year's upgrades are looking to be incremental refinements, following the complete redesign of the device last year. If you own an older Pro device that still uses the older design, this upgrade will be compelling. However, for iPhone 17 Pro owners, it will be a very similar device that you could easily skip and upgrade to the rumoured 20th anniversary all-glass iPhone next year.
