Apple has today unveiled its second-generation HomePod mini smart speaker, the first refresh to the product line since its launch in 2020.
Announcing the new home hub via a press release, Apple said the new HomePod mini now supports Siri AI, has a S10 chip and is available in Blue, Green, Pink, White and Midnight.
Besides new colours, the external design appears the same as the previous generation, with its round orb shape, covered in a fabric speaker mesh with a glass top that displays Siri's glow when speaking.
The glow on top has been updated to reflect the new colour of Siri AI, and new animations when interacting with Siri on the device.
Product Overview
- Up from S5 to S10 chip
- Siri AI support
- Same external design
- Yellow and Orange have been replaced by Pink and Green
- Midnight remains
- The Blue option is a slightly different shade
Siri AI could fix the HomePod minis biggest problem
The old HomePod mini remains a good speaker for the home, but has always been let down by Siri.
Compared to other home hubs on the market, such as Google Home and Alexa, it has limited knowledge and can't answer most questions, simply telling you to ask Siri again on your iPhone.
Hopefully Siri AI on the new models will bring HomePod mini in line with the competition.
The chip inside the new HomePod mini is the same chip that is found in the Apple Watch Series 10, Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3. S10 is a 5-generation jump up from S5, and brings new Apple Intelligence Features.
However, I do already have some concerns about the S10 chip, as someone who has used Siri AI on my Apple Watch Series 10 for the past month.
Siri on my Apple Watch is a lot slower than on my other devices, and requires more thinking time for simple tasks such as setting a timer. This could mean whilst we are getting a smarter Siri on the HomePod, it could be a little slower than previously.
For example, if you use your HomePod mini to set timers, the new one could be a little slower at completing this request. However, the new device is not out yet, so Apple could surprise us.
Pre-order, pricing and availability
The new HomePod mini is available to pre-order from today, and will be available on Friday, 30th October.
It costs more than the previous model, at £149. The previous HomePod mini launched at £99, and received a price hike in June 2026 up to £129.
