Apple yesterday closed three of its retail stores in Connecticut, Maryland and California for the final time.

In a statement to 9to5Mac earlier this year, Apple said these closures were due to the "departure of several retailers and declining conditions" in which these stores were located.

Which stores have closed?

Apple has closed:

  • Apple North County, California
  • Apple Trumbull, Connecticut
  • Apple Towson Town Center, Maryland

Impact on employees

Employees at Apple Trumbull and Apple North County are expected to be able to continue in their current roles, at other nearby Apple retail locations.

Apple Store employees at Apple Towson Town Center will be able to apply for new roles through the "collective bargaining agreement", as this was the only Apple Store location in the US that had been unionised.

The union agreement requires Apple to offer Towson employees positions at any new store that opens within a 50 mile radius of the old location, though no plans have been shared for a new store in the area.

Union response

IAM Union, which represented employees at Towson Town Centre, said they were "outraged by Apple’s decision to close its Towson, Md., store", and said that they were exploring legal options and "will work with elected officials and allies to hold Apple accountable."
