An Apple executive who manages Apple Vision Pro will leave Apple next week for OpenAI, according to a report from Bloomberg.
Vice President Paul Meade will join OpenAI's hardware team after managing the team behind Apple's augmented reality (AR) headset for seven years.
The Bloomberg report also suggests that Apple is working on smart glasses that will release in the coming years, a project that Meade was leading.
Meade began at Apple working on iPad in 2010 and spent 5 year working on iPhone.
Who is replacing Meade?
Fletcher Rothkopf, Meade's deputy will assume his responsibilities. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says that he is "in charge of the product design function for the Vision Pro and smart glasses efforts".
Why is he leaving?
The report suggests that Meade may be leaving following leadership changes within the company, including the promotion of John Ternus, Apple's current hardware chief who will become CEO on 1st September.
As a result of Ternus' promotion, the head of Apple Silicon, Johny Srouji, was promoted to Chief Hardware Officer, and made changes to the hardware group which left some executives in similar positions to Meade "feeling [that] they had been demoted".
This is the second shake-up of the Apple Vision Pro group in recent years after Meade's predecessor Mike Rockwell left the role to take over Siri following its delayed launch in 2024.
