Apple's MacBook lineup has never offered more choice, with different laptop models to suit every need.
This guide explains the differences between each model to help you decide which MacBook suits your needs, whether you are looking at buying your first Mac or your upgrading an older model.
For a full breakdown of all Mac models, their specifications, colours and design view our Mac Guide.
The Lineup
There are 3 MacBook models to choose from, these are:
- MacBook Neo, starting at £699
- MacBook Air, starting at £1,299
- MacBook Pro, starting at £1,999
To quickly summarise the lineup, MacBook Neo is the entry-level model, MacBook Air is the mainstream everyday laptop and MacBook Pro is built for professionals.
As you climb up the lineup, you'll notice improvements in various areas including the display, speakers and trackpad - though MacBook Neo's hardware is considered top class compared to other laptops in this price range.
MacBook Neo
MacBook Neo is a great device for students and lightweight computer users who browse the web, answer emails and write documents in apps like Microsoft Word.
This model uses Apple's A18 Pro chip, that was originally released in the iPhone 16 Pro.
This means the Neo has sufficient performance for light gaming, including Roblox and titles found on Apple Arcade, but it may struggle to keep up during long play sessions.
If you do use the device for gaming, this should be considered an added bonus rather than a key thing you do on the Neo everyday.
Upgrades
MacBook Neo comes with 8GB of unified memory and 256GB of storage for £699. This will be sufficient for light users who will access their documents from the cloud.
A nice upgrade to consider is the £799 model, which comes with 512GB of storage and Touch ID authentication so you don't need to type out your password.
Student Discount
Apple offers £100 off MacBook Neo if you buy through their education store, so students can buy MacBook Neo from £599.
MacBook Air
MacBook Air is a much more capable device compared to the Neo and is great for multitaskers, creatives, programmers and commuters thanks to the thin and light design.
The Air has the more powerful M-series M5 chip, providing significantly more performance which is ideal for users who have lots open at once or use graphic heavy apps.
MacBook Air is a great choice for programming, creative work and everyday productivity. It also has enough graphics performance for games such as Minecraft, The Sims and Cities: Skylines.
Side Note: MacBook Air has been a key player in the development of this website!
Other quality of life upgrades over the MacBook Neo includes thinner display bezels, a haptic force-touch trackpad, MagSafe charging and thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports.
Upgrades
The Air is available in two sizes - 13-inch or 15-inch.
The £1,299 13-inch model comes with 16GB unified memory and 512GB of storage which is the ideal model to go for if considering this device.
Upgrading this device can get expensive quick, as it is an extra £300 to add just an extra 512GB of storage.
If you need more memory or storage, consider the MacBook Pro instead as you can get a better display, speakers and cooling.
Student Discount
Apple offers a £100 discount on MacBook Air.
MacBook Pro
MacBook Pro is Apple's best Mac laptop and is the only model that has a fan and a 120Hz mini-LED ProMotion display.
All other models are fan-less designs that use 60Hz LCD displays which produce a more washed-out colour if viewing the screen in a dark setting with black/darker content being displayed.
Pro is built for heavy users who push their device to its limits whose workflows include video editing, music production, motion graphics & software development.
MacBook Pro comes with some of Apple's best chips including M5, M5 Pro and M5 Max. These chips can be configured to as much as 128GB of memory.
As this device starts at £1,999, it is only for professionals who will already know that they need this performance. Most people should not consider this model and narrow it down between the Neo or Air.
Student Discount
Apple offers a £100 student discount on MacBook Pro.
Conclusion
For most people, the MacBook Air is the best choice offering a balance of performance, battery life and portability. These features make it a great work, school and everyday general use laptop.
If you're on a budget, and use your laptop to browse the web, work on documents and stream content, MacBook Neo is the go-to choice and provides the same full macOS experience as on MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.
MacBook Pro remains the best option if your workflow includes heavy creative work or professional video editing.
Should I Buy Now?
The entire MacBook lineup was refreshed just a few months ago in March 2026, so now is a great time to buy.
Those eligible for student discount should consider waiting to see if Apple launches a special back to school offer on its education store, as it has done in the past.
